Lactase, protease and friends: digestive enzyme basics
Enzymes are the body’s tools for breaking food down. Here is what each one does.
By Montosun editorial team
Your body makes enzymes to break food into smaller parts it can absorb. Each enzyme works on a specific kind of food.
Lactase breaks down lactose, the natural sugar in milk. Protease breaks down protein. Other enzymes, such as amylase and lipase, work on starches and fats.
Enzyme supplements list their activity in units rather than milligrams. Ask a healthcare professional whether they suit you.
